Got this for free ages ago and never read it. I'm so glad I did. What an interesting concept and rich characters. Not to mention its set partly in my home state.

Scott Waverly isn't like most people. He spends his days finding and fixing computer security holes. And Scott is skeptical of his new client's claim that they have been calculating and tracking soul identities for almost twenty-six hundred years. Are they running a freaky cult? Soul Identity Dennis Batchelder 9780979805608 Books Reviews

If I had reviewed this book after the first chapter I would have given it 5 stars. It was catchy. It grabbed you from the first page and the writing was tight. About a third of the way through I would have given it 4 stars. The writer has an obvious chip on his shoulder about religion and makes numerous mocking comments about Christianity. About half way through I realized that the glaring plot hole was not going to be addressed. The whole plot of the book revolves around this company that can identify your "soul." This soul is not reincarnated, but is reborn in future generations. People create a "soul line," where they leave money and wisdom for their future "soul" carrier. Huge problem here. The author never defines what a "soul" is, other than a bunch of hash marks on your eye (like a fingerprint). A soul carrier has no knowledge of past lives. It's would be the same as saying everyone has a distinct fingerprint and someone in the future will have your same fingerprint so leave all your money to that person. Not only that, but everyone takes huge meaning from this, like a religion, and churches are formed around it. I didn't understand why leaving your money and wisdom to a random person who had the same eye-print would be any more meaningful than leaving it to your children, or grandchildren, or even a distant relative who shares a portion of your DNA. Three fourths of the way through the book I felt that the writing got very sloppy. The dialogue became very stilted and formulaic and the plot became even more improbable. The end was rushed and basically unsatisfying. I have no desire to read the second book in the series, even if it were also free.
The author also seemed to undermine his own arguments against religion. He claimed that religions (Christianity in particular) are bad because they are just people being lied to and feeling special about themselves that they are saved and no one else is, that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Then the author creates his own religion about "soul rebirth" that has a special membership and tries to give people meaning in their life. The difference, to the author, being that his religion is better because they allow people to believe whatever they want to believe (as long as they don't believe that they are the only right way, because then they're "whackos.") The protagonist discovers that the people he labeled "whackos" are really correct in what they believe. A logical conclusion would be that calling religious people "whackos" is foolish, because they might actually be right!
Scott Waverly tests security and computer systems. He gets a contract with a very old company, Soul Identity. They track down their clients' reincarnated souls and give them possessions and information from their past lives. The premise for the plot is completely unique and creative. I was really expecting to enjoy the book, at least for the first 10%.

Then Scott figures out a formula for finding reincarnated souls using a graphics program and dream writing. Next the love interest hops in bed with him within a few hours after meeting and several minor characters discuss his love life. The book goes downhill from there. And it just keeps going downhill. By the time I was 80% finished, the dialog reminded me of Saturday morning cartoons. For example,"Will it be dangerous?...I don't know what I'd do if something happened to you, Bob my love." This is said after pages of discussion of obviously dangerous plans.

Why did I torture myself and finish the book? I'm not sure. But I loved the premise, and I did finish it. That's why it gets 3 stars out of 5.

There are times when the pacing is slowed down with technical computer stuff, or details that really don't add to the book. Sometimes there are incidents that really have nothing to do with anything. There are numerous plot flaws and technical errors that even I noticed.

The dialog at times is stilted and instead of helping characterization, is more to give information about the plot. There are too many minor characters for a book of this scope, and the main characters don't really have much depth. However Scott, the main character, is flippant, irreverent, and slightly humorous. Maybe that's why I finished the book.

It reads like a practice novel. I wouldn't have published it without a lot of corrections. The author obviously has a decent fan base and has written sequels, but I won't be reading them to see if his writing has improved.
Pretty decent storyline, but I found the grammar absolutely appalling. I doubt this book had an editor though The amount of simple errors was extremely high that I found myself shaking my head throughout the entire text. If you ever want a simpler way of proofreading your books, open your text with a TTS app and listen to the text.

While I found this book pretty decent, I won't be continuing to the next book, simply because I can't do that to myself. I think this author needs to up his game and bring in a troop of beta readers to proof his books before they ever get published.
